‘How I PLAY’ video featuring Carl Cox

PLAYdifferently’s ‘How I PLAY’ series continues with a new video featuring Carl Cox discussing his technical set-up with the MODEL 1 mixer. The video shows Carl explaining how his legendary multiple-deck set-up works, his filtering techniques, use of FX and how he really uses the MODEL 1 like a true instrument.

Carl Cox says, “Making a video with the MODEL 1 was a lot of fun, to be able to really show what this mixer can do from my point of view was a pleasure to show, in its raw form.”

Cox has been performing on the MODEL 1 mixer for over 18-months after first testing it at his villa in Ibiza. MODEL 1 was designed by PLAYdifferently’s Richie Hawtin with Andy Rigby-Jones.

Cox went on to say: “Now that I have been working with the MODEL 1 mixer for over a year, I feel now it’s a part of my equipment family. It’s like having a favourite car I drive every day, the power and energy that I get from using this mixer is like no other experience that I get from using anything else, it feels like I have one arm tied behind my back if I do not get to use it. Being able to pin point the frequencies through the filter channels is the very key to this mixer. I have never used anything like it, to be able to make your mixes, when you play live, sound even bigger. It makes me want to give my audience the very best in audible sound.”

Richie Hawtin & Andy Rigby-Jones speak about new technology collaboration

AFTER 25 years of working at Allen & Heath and being an integral part of their world-renowned Xone DJ division, Andy Rigby-Jones left the company in 2014 and partnered with Richie Hawtin to combine their expertise and unique vision to create new innovative instruments for the DJ and electronic music market.

Over the past two years, the pair have been developing and testing their first prototype of an instrument that they feel is missing from the professional segment of the market. Assessed at various leading worldwide events including ENTER.Ibiza, Glastonbury Festival and the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix in Los Angeles last month, the first prototype has already seen a number of iterations and is nearing completion.

Last week at NAMM (Anaheim, California), the world’s largest trade show specializing in music equipment and technology, the pair revealed their “PLAYdifferently” brand, a partnership with the Audiotonix group, known for their strength in audio engineering, manufacturing and international distribution with brands including Allen & Heath and DiGiCo.

Andy Rigby-Jones states: “ The last two years have been a whirlwind of activity working with Richie on this exciting new project, but we both realised that to get our creation out to a wider audience we should partner with a major manufacturer, and who better than my old employer Allen & Heath! A&H are now part of the Audiotonix group and as such provide unrivalled manufacturing, marketing and technical expertise in the UK.”

PLAYdifferently will shortly launch its first product promising a new level of uncompromising quality and intuitive functionality combined with hand-crafted British design. Richie Hawtin states: “Our aim is to create instruments which DJs and electronic musicians can PLAY; magnifying the creative impulse that drives our most inspired performances. This company is not about one performance style – or my style – this is for all artists who strive to unlock and expand their own innate talent.”

Audiotonix and Allen & Heath bring unrivalled expertise in design, manufacturing and distribution, with Hawtin and Rigby-Jones committed to fulfilling the creative needs of the most discerning performing artists. This unique partnership opens up the professional market by co-operating with a series of world-leading artists in order to develop products that fill the needs of those performing around the globe.

Glenn Rogers MD of Allen & Heath commented: “ Richie and Andy have both played key roles in making Xone the successful DJ brand it is today, so we’re excited to join forces with them again on this different direction of play.”

Richie Hawtin & Andy Rigby-Jones team up on tech collaboration, PLAYdifferently

Richie Hawtin & Andy Rigby-Jones announced today at NAMM a collaborative partnership with Allen & Heath and parent company Audiotonix. Richie described the long-standing relationship between the parties, with a new goal of creating an instrument to take the artistry of DJ-ing and performance to the next level. “The ethos of Play Differently is to create products that will magnify the individuality and expand the creativity of today’s generation of electronic music artists, producers and DJs . We hope to encourage and inspire creatives to PLAY Differently.”
