The last 18 months have seen the talented Brazilian-born artist ANNA reach new heights with productions such as ‘Hidden Beauties’ and her powerful remix of Jon Hopkins ‘Singularity’, garnering acclaim from every corner of the industry, and achieving large streaming numbers on Spotify. New music from ANNA has been huge in festival sets for many world-leading techno DJs all summer. Then there was the richly deserved Essential Mix for the BBC that started 2019 off right, as the Brazilian distilled 20 years of DJing experience into an inspiring two-hour techno masterclass. DJ Mag rightly recognised her talents, putting her on the cover of their North American edition in February, a nod to the breakaway impact she’s had on that region.
Today’s success has been two decades in the making, stretching back to the nightclub her father owned in the countryside outside São Paulo, where she honed her craft as a DJ from the age of 14. Her journey since then has been marked by passion, hard work and unrelenting dedication to her craft. You can see this when she plays ― a skilled and accomplished selector, her performances are energetic, engaging and captivating. Gigs at the legendary Warung, D-Edge and Time Warp Brazil in her home country are the stuff of legends, while globally she’s in ever-increasing demand playing everywhere from Movement Detroit, Awakenings, Tomorrowland, DC10 and Block in Tel Aviv. For an insight into her talents, you only need to check her vinyl DJ set for Cercle from last February, that’s already hitwell over two million views. No surprise Mixmag heralded her as one of the best DJs of 2018 in their yearly wrap-up.
On the production front, she’s dropped critically acclaimed music on virtually every significant label in techno, including Hotflush, Drumcode, NovaMute, Clash Lion, Sapiens, Domino with her Jon Hopkins remix, plus a new original for Tale Of Us on Afterlife. Her relationship with Kompakt continues to reap fruits. Following on from the success of ‘Hidden Beauties’ that was acclaimed by Pitchfork and judged one of 2018’s Top Tracks by Mixmag, she released the stirring ‘Remembrance’ EP, highlighted by ‘When I Am Only A Dream’. In August this year, she released a very special collaboration with Kittin titled ‘Forever Ravers’ ― which is already being heralded as ‘techno track of the year’ by a number of media platforms and certainly an anthem for our times.
Their debut album 'Since I Left You', released in 2000, laid the blueprint for the future of sample-based music in the 21st century. Similarly, their follow up album, 2016's Wildflower', sits on a patchwork of samples earning the band further critical acclaim across the globe.
It's not only through their studio albums that The Avalanches have made a mark on the musical landscape. They have released cult famous mixtapes that have become heavily coveted collectibles.
As DJs, they have performed at their own infamous monthly club night ‘Brains', to the main stage at some of the biggest festivals in the world including Splendour In The Grass, Fuji Rock, Primavera Sound, Glastonbury, Coachella and Creamfields.
Big believers in the life-changing power of music, wherever they're playing and whatever they're spinning, The Avalanches' sets will always be joyous, raucous and celebratory affairs.
Their highly acclaimed third full-length album "We Will Always Love You' was released Dec 11, 2020 and has received worldwide critical acclaim. It's an album for music lovers that many are calling their album of the year.
Avalon Emerson is from the desert. While she currently lives in Berlin, the music she produces comes from the dreamlike expanse and abstract textures of the Sonoran landscapes of Arizona. Her journey has taken her from that sunbaked state to the contemporary dance music mecca via a long stint in San Francisco, where she cut her teeth as a DJ in the city’s storied warehouse party scene. In her DJ sets and
productions now, she offers a timeless narrative that reflects a passion for the sound design of new wave, the futurism of techno, the soul of American house and the exuberance of rave. Though she’s built up steam in 2015 from multiple sets at Panorama Bar, and globetrotting all around Europe and North America, she’s just getting started, and continues to outdo herself with original productions released on Whities, Shtum, Spring Theory, and Icee Hot, and her own DJ tool edit pool, the Cybernedits series.
Carmine Conte of the Berlin-based Italian duo Tale of Us (with Matteo Milleri) became known for their restrained yet highly emotive tech-house tracks and remixes, as well as their adventurous DJ sets, before venturing into modern classical and ambient music. After debuting in 2010, they quickly became one of the underground dance scene's fastest-rising stars, scoring club hits with releases like 2011's Dark Song or their 2013 remix of Mano le Tough's "Changing Days." They also became in-demand DJs, appearing at major clubs and festivals throughout the world and releasing their first mix CD, Renaissance: The Mix Collection, in 2013. Following well-received EPs for Minus and R&S, as well as the formation of their Afterlife imprint, Tale of Us made their long-awaited full-length debut with the exquisite ambient work Endless, released by Deutsche Grammophon in 2017.
Carmine Conte was born in Toronto and moved to Italy when he was very young along with Matteo Milleri. Initially based in Milan, they formed Tale of Us (inspired by the Supermayer song "Two of Us") in 2008. They both decided to quit college and pursue music, and they relocated to Berlin in 2009. Holed up in a tiny apartment, the two constantly made music for several months, and their first release was the EP Upon a Time, released by Barraca Music in early 2010. However, it was their joyous remix of Thugfucker's "Disco Gnome," the initial release on Life and Death, that became their first club hit, and helped propel the early success of the fledgling label. Attracting the attention of Seth Troxler, Tale of Us released Dark Song on Visionquest in 2011. Further singles appeared on Life and Death, including collaborations with The/Das and Vaal, and Another Earth was issued by Richie Hawtin's Minus label in 2013. That same year, they were voted number 2 in Resident Advisor's annual Top DJs poll, and their well-received double-CD Renaissance: The Mix Collection was issued.
Tale of Us kept busy with performances, including a residency at Ibiza club DC 10 and a constant stream of remixes for artists including Caribou, Gui Boratto, and Plastikman. Their original releases weren't quite as common, but 2015 saw the release of North Star/Silent Space (on R&S) and Astral, a collaboration with Mind Against (on Life and Death). The duo founded the Afterlife label in 2016 (named after their residency at another Ibiza club, Space) and issued "Monument" (with Vaal) in 2017. Also that year, Tale of Us made the surprising move to classical institution Deutsche Grammophon for the release of their full-length debut. Endless, a piano-heavy ambient release, was the legendary label's first full-length of original material by a club act. This was shortly followed by Endless Remixes, as well as the Fabric 97 mix CD.

Kx5 is a collaboration over a decade and a half in the making. deadmau5 and Kaskade effectively changed the electronic music landscape when they paired together for 2008's slow-burning" Remember" and the influence of their follow up "Move For Me" cemented their influence as the standard. Both tracks peaked at No. 1
within a week of one another on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart. The GRAMMY-nominated artists' paths crossed again on 2016's ominous "Beneath with Me" featuring Skylar Grey. More recently, in July 2021, Kaskade made history as the first public concert performed at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium. The sold-out show featured a surprise set by deadmau5 and had the two artists reuniting again for a set to close the show. As Kx5, deadmau5 and Kaskade are primed to write their own history. Now the pair officially join forces to form a unique collaborative union.

One of techno's most influential figures, Richie Hawtin played an essential role in developing the sound of minimal techno, as well as spreading its popularity throughout the global club scene. Most famous for his experimental acid techno productions as Plastikman, including the classic albums Musik (1994) and Consumed (1998), he is equally well-regarded for his groundbreaking live sets and mix CDs (especially 1999's Decks, EFX & 909) which utilize cutting-edge DJ technology, fusing loops of techno records with additional synthesizers and drum machines. Initially based in Windsor, Ontario and connected with the techno scene in nearby Detroit, he co-founded the highly influential Plus 8 (and its harder sublabel Probe Records) along with John Acquaviva, later establishing Minus and relocating to Berlin during the early 2000s, just as minimal techno began receiving mainstream exposure. Hawtin has continued pushing the limits of technology, developing highly conceptual events which are often intertwined with the art world, such as a 2013 performance at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City which resulted in Plastikman's EX album.
Hawtin was born in Oxfordshire, England in the early '70s, and when he was nine moved with his parents to Windsor, Ontario, Canada. An early interest in electronic-based pop and dance music turned serious when Hawtin discovered the tracks being pumped out by his neighbor across the river, Detroit. Starting as a DJ in 1987, Hawtin quickly became involved in composition through his direct involvement in Detroit's tight-knit community of musicians and producers. Combining early influences from European synth pop groups like Kraftwerk and New Order with the stripped-down techno futurism of Detroit innovators such as Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Hawtin's tracks are as steeped in Motor City tradition as they are in deviating from it in terms of texture and rhythmic complexity.
Initially working under pseudonyms such as Circuit Breaker and Robotman, he released his first album (Dimension Intrusion) in 1993 as FUSE; all of these releases appeared through Plus 8 and Probe. Signing to Mute imprint NovaMute as Plastikman, he released the "Spastik" single and full-length Sheet One (with packaging designed to resemble a sheet of acid tabs) near the end of the year. His subsequent full-lengths focused more on home listening than club play; his deepest excursions into ambient techno include his trilogy of albums with Pete Namlook as From Within, as well as Plastikman's sparse, aquatic Consumed album from 1998. Additionally, he used the Concept 1 moniker to release a series of stripped-down experimental techno 12"s, one per month throughout 1996, before issuing the compilation CD:96 in 1998.
After establishing Minus in 1998, Hawtin released the innovative Decks, EFX & 909 the following year, setting a new standard for techno mixes. He expanded on this concept with the even more complex DE9: Closer to the Edit (2001) and DE9: Transitions (2005). Based in Berlin by this point, he collaborated with choreographer Enzo Cosimi to compose a piece for the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. In 2010, he released Arkives: 1993-2010, an extensive box set compiling all of his work as Plastikman to that date. Along with Loco Dice and Ean Golden, he toured several North American universities in 2012, presenting a series of seminars and performances titled CNTRL: Beyond EDM. Hawtin and his brother Matthew have worked on conceptual art pieces, including Contained, which was presented at the Art Basel showcase ink Miami in 2013. He performed as Plastikman at the Guggenheim Museum in New York later in the year, leading to the release of the 2014 full-length EX. Hawtin was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music Technology by the University of Huddersfield in July of 2015. Later in the year, he commemorated the 25th anniversary of Plus 8 with the release of From My Mind to Yours, a studio album containing tracks credited to several of his past pseudonyms. In 2019, he released Close Combined, an audiovisual mix album stitching together performances recorded in Glasgow, London, and Tokyo during the previous year. The following year saw the release of the dancefloor-focused EP Time Warps. ~ Sean Cooper & Paul Simpson, Rovi
Stephan Bodzin has been a hugely influential figure within the global techno scene for years. The reason the German has endured where many had fallen by the wayside is because of his devotion to authenticity. “Without it, everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell,” says the son of an experimental musician who is now a revered talent in his own right.
After starting out by composing music for several prestigious European theaters, Stephan Bodzin soon fell in love with nocturnal club sounds and began producing his own brand of techno. He impressed right from the off and has gone on to work with Marc Romboy many times, including on albums like “Luna” and more recently “Kerberos & Styx” in 2014, and with Oliver Huntemann under myriad aliases including Rekorder. The fruits of these labors have defined the modern techno scene until today.
“Throughout my releases and all my collaborations I managed to let my ideas flow freely and to develop my own style,” Stephan Bodzin explains, and he proved that with 2007’s debut album, “Liebe ist…” and the many other original productions that have followed, such as 2014’s single ‘Sungam’, which sat at number four on the RA charts, and his massive remix of Super Flu’s “Jo Gurt” in the same year.
Stephan Bodzin productions are driving, hypnotic things with a very real and memorable sense of melody that sticks long in the mind. Of course, running his own Herzblut label has also defined his career since 2006, and as well as being a place for his own work, has also housed refreshing contemporary music from Dominik Eulberg, Max Cooper and Pig&Dan amongst many more.
In the club, meanwhile, Stephan Bodzin is both a story telling DJ who really takes dance floors on a ride through his many musical influences, but is also an impressive live specialist who creates mesmerising, high impact soundtracks on the fly. Across all continents, there is barely a club or festival in the world worth its salt that he hasn’t headlined at some point or other.
2015 saw this Bremen mastermind release his second full length, “Powers of Ten”, as well as a new single on DJ Tennis’ and Tale of Us’ taste making label Life and Death. The album is another magical piece of work that focuses on melody and rhythm, on fat bass and vivid sound design and is a truly captivating journey through the mind, music, body and soul of one of dance music’s truly modern greats. After its release, a great team of modern music makers was enlisted to remix tracks from it: Maceo Plex & Shall Ocin, Fur Coat, Extrawelt, long time musical sparring partner Marc Romboy, Pan-Pot, Max Cooper, Agents of Time, Dominik Eulberg and many more all contributed to what is an essential collection. With a remix of ‘Sleepless’, a Pan-Pot track from their latest album, Stephan Bodzin closed the latest chapter of 2015 in what has been an exhilarating musical journey in his capable and creative hands.
